Architecture in Chicago

Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie house. Built for Fred C. Robie in 1909 (actually finished in 1912, but that didn't stop people from living in it). This was essentially the beginning of Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie style houses. There were three different families that lived in the house within only 10 years, and after that it was turned into a dorm. It was almost demolished twice to build a bigger dorms building before a private buyer bought it and saw to it that it was put on the historic registry.

Mr. Robie had a very specific idea of what he wanted with this house. The high terraces and planters give the house a sense of privacy from the street without having to have shades or curtains on the windows to obstruct the view out.

Kara in front of the main entrance to the Robie House. FLW wanted people that were visiting the house to experience the building as they approached it, so from the driveway you have to walk all the way around the front of the house to get to the main entrance.

Nice job on this one Mies..."What? We need two bathrooms?...Oh, that's ok, we'll just make them both half the size"...REALLY?! I'm no scientist, but this doesn't seem to work.

We have furniture!!

It may surprise you to know that the computer renderings I posted of our apartment a while ago were very true to life as we actually had absolutely no furniture. Well, that all changed this week with the arrival of our Ikea shipment. I wasted no time in assembling our bed, dressers, couch, and a couple of tables. IKEA is a beautiful thing.

It was like Christmas...and I got to use the new screwdriver I got at Walgreens to put it all together.

You'll notice the centerpiece of the living room allocated in its proper location by the window.

You can tell these weren't done on the computer because there's messes all over the place. We haven't quite found or gotten used to having a place for everything.

Long Time No Post

Well it has been a while since I've posted. TFA pretty much took over my life for 6 weeks and decided to run away with it. Good thing I have Nate to keep me pretty grounded. However this past week has been awesome, because it is my first and last week off before school starts. So we spent a lot of time watching arrested development on netflix, sleeping, cooking yummy food, and doing touristy stuff. It's been really nice. Here are some of the pics of the week.

We went to Navy Pier, which is a really touristy area of the city--it's the harbor closest to down town.
Pretty view.

While there, we saw some idiots who thought it was cute and funny to tube in the harbor. So dumb:

100 yards away from anything else? I think not.

Then we went on the ferris wheel at Navy Pier in honor of the first ferris wheel being built in chicago for the World's Fair in 1893. The original was torn down after the fair, and the metal was used for a bridge somewhere in michigan.

Us at the top!

Then we went to the zoo! The zoo is particularly cool here in chicago because it is 100 percent totally free. Amazing. Nate has been wanting to go really, really bad since we got here so I finally caved!

Here we are in the Lion House!

This Jaguar was pacing and angry about something.

Now he's eating his dinner...all better.

These little black balls are Gorillas. They enjoy eating their own fecal matter. No joke. All of the monkeys--apes, gorillas, chimpanzees, spider, etc. ate their own poo. I witnessed all of it. Our favorite was a special chimp who would catch the droppings on their way out or as Nate so elegantly put it--"he would extract the substance from himself", climb up to his special corner, smash it against the wall, and then proceed to suck it off the wall. There were many splatters in his corner so we assumed this was a daily ritual. I believe we were to enthralled with this behavior to even think of taking a picture. Sad that our favorite memory about the zoo is only etched in our memories and not public domain.

We ended the day with the flamingos, and this picture reminds me so much of Mom that I couldn't resist putting it up! How many pictures do we have of her with her eyes closed? I think a better question would be how many do we have of her not with her eyes closed? I apparently get my good looks and picture taking skills from her. LOVE YOU MOM!

Well we miss all of you so much and wish you would all hurry up and come visit us! Love to everyone.

I made these in my spare time

Yesterday I went out and bought myself a measuring tape, measured out our apartment, and drew it up in CAD, and today I spent most of the day doing these renderings on the computer. These are the kinds of things I do when I'm bored....I'm open for ideas.

Sweaty

Today I spent 8 hours sweating in a school without air conditioning, and tomorrow I will do it again, and the next day and the next day, all the way until July 24th.

I teach for America.

Students!

Oh hey everybody! It's been a long time since I've actually posted on this thing that I created! Good thing I have Nate to keep everyone updated since I've been working my brains out trying to solve our nation's poverty one high school student at a time! So a little about what I've been doing:

Well this week I finally got to meet my students. Oh my gosh you guys, I just love them. It's amazing to me how quickly they have weeded themselves into my heart. So so so amazing. So since I only have 11 students, all African American, let me introduce you to them:

Crystal: Crystal is the chicka who has all the answers. She laughs at all our jokes, and seems to already know what we are teaching. She also wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up. She is honestly a pleasure to have in class, and pushes many of the others to think beyond the obvious.

Lester: Lester is in our 11th and 12th grade class and looks like he is about 12. He is quiet and reserved, but incredibly bright. We've been reading a novel this week and he has some of the most amazing insights, but he has a hard time writing down the ideas that he can articulate via verbal communication.

Devonte: Devonte is hilarious, he is very relatable and always has a smile on his face. His dad is very focused on him working hard in school and doing his best. So Devonte comes every day prepared to learn and ready to work hard.

Lakeisha: Lakeisha is so so so quiet. She is afraid of answering a question wrong, but most of the time she has the right answer. I'm always impressed with how Lakeisha tries very hard to incorporate the concepts that we teach into her writing and reading. She is very reflective and is pushing herself. She's very behind in english, so I'm excited to see her working so hard to improve!

George: We were told by the legal teacher that George would give us some trouble because he has some emotional issues. However, he hasn't been hardly any trouble at all. In some ways he tried to question our authority, but we've noticed that he really just doesn't like to be singled out. I think this is because he is really struggling in English--he is still failing most of our assessments, but I know he has the ability to succeed, so he will.

Ptah: Ptah is quiet intelligent, and a deep thinker, if you can get past his sleeping! I do not know what that boy is doing at night, but it is not sleeping. We think he might be a baby-daddy because in his survey when we asked who the most important person in his life was, he said his "woman/wifey". He also said that where he saw himself in the next 5 years is working as an accountant with a wife and kids. Very cute.

Cameron: Cameron showed up the first day of class, but then missed the next 3 days of class. The rumors are that he was jumped and that is why he hasn't come to class again. We can't get ahold of his mom to verify this or not. The legal teacher thinks that it might be gang related. Needless to say we are all very worried.

Jordan: Jordan is hilarious. He has a huge smile and is a favorite of the ladies. Hilariously, they are always trying to flirt with him any chance they can. So funny. He is good at convincing the rest of the class to go along with what we have going. Just a good natured leader.

Deantae: Deantae is a lot like Jordan, generally happy to be there and willing to go along with what we are doing. He is very behind, so we have a lot of work to do to get him on track, but he has a will because he really wants to graduate high school.

Marquiesha: Marqueisha is so smart and wants to go to De Paul University to study accounting. She works hard and catches onto concepts quickly. She has a 9 month old who she loves like crazy and loves to talk about him. My only concern with Marquiesha is that she has talked about taking a break after high school before college, and I am worried that break will expand for the rest of her life. It's better to just go right after high school, you are already in the habit of school.

Jarrell: Jarrell is an athlete who is very behind. We have a lot of work to do with him, and he seems to be sleeping all the time in class. He is hesitant to give answers in class, i think because he doesn't want to give a wrong answer. We are going to have to encourage him to share with us, to be willing to even try. We have to convince him that he can so that he will try.

I love each and every one of these students. I honestly believe that each one of these students will go onto college and end poverty for themselves. They have the desire and they have the capability. Thursday we finished the book The House on Mango Street, which is about a girl who grew up in the poverty neighborhoods of Chicago, and decides that she wants to leave this place and never come back. At the end of the book an old woman grabs her face and says, "you have the ability to get out, but you have to come back. You have to come back for the others who cannot leave as easily as you." So the main character says, that she's leaving because mango street cannot hold her forever, but she's going to come back for everyone else. My student George, just sat there at the end. When his reading group asked him what he thought, he said, "It was good. It was really relatable because it was like real life. It was a good book." and I could tell that this had struck a chord with him. George is hoping to get a football scholarship to get out.

These kids know what they are facing, and they are pushing forward to change their reality. They really are amazing, and I love them so much.

Crossroads 2010

Here we are, Crossroads 2010!!!

Eric Clapton's "Blackie". Probably the most recognizable guitar ever. Pieced together his favorite components from various guitars. This was his main studio and live performance guitar for like 15 years.

Clapton's Cherry Red Gibson ES-335. Used in his Cream days, can also be seen on the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus

Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar "Lenny". Given to him by his wife Lenora (Lenny) for his birthday. This is the only guitar of his entire collection made available for sale. The night she gave it to him, he wrote the song Lenny on the guitar while she slept.

First of many Eric sightings of the day. On stage with Sonny Landreth

Robert Cray

Little old band from Texas. They left straight from the show right after their set to play in Milwakee that night.

Doyle Bramhall II and Sheryl Crow.

Doyle and Sheryl

Of course Eric comes out to play with Doyle and Sheryl

Buddy Guy and Ron Wood with Robert Lang

Buddy Guy can usually be seen playing a polka-dot guitar (you can see the polka-dot carpet) When he left Louisiana he told his mother that when he got famous he'd buy her a polka-dot Cadillac. She died before she ever knew of his fame. The polka-dot guitar is in memory of her and where he came from.

Derek Trucks & others from the Allman Brothers Band.

3 days before the festival Gregg Allman had to go in for an emergency liver transplant(years of living the Rock and Roll lifestyle seek their revenge), so all the musicians from the Allman Brothers Band were there except Gregg, so they couldn't call themselves the Allman Brothers Band.

Then Warren Haynes came out to complete the Allman Bros lineup, and the guitarists from Los Lobos...

...then Johnny Winter came out...

This concert was the most amazing thing ever. It was one unbelievable set after another.

Jeff Beck.

His bassist Rhonda Smith was way good. Worth checking out.

Eric came out and kicked off his set with Crossroads.

Eric and Jeff Beck.
Both former Yardbirds guitarists. Jeff came in after Eric left.

Eric and Jeff

Eric and Steve Winwood. This set was INCREDIBLE!! Two of the most talented musicians alive.

Eric and Steve

Eric, Jimmie Vaughan, and Robert Cray welcome BB to the stage

BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan, and Robert Cray. We scoped out some seats and moved closer to the stage for the last two sets of the night.
